Another Year Older

Standard

I recently celebrated my birthday. My wife asked me if I feel like I am 35. What does it feel like to be 35? Am I supposed to feel a little rundown? Is it supposed to take longer for me to recover from a night out? I do feel a little rundown (I could take a nap at will), but I attribute that to my rock-star lifestyle (I rarely go to bed before one), and the fact that it takes me longer to recover leaves me rundown, so I’m back at square one. It’s circular, like a carousel. It goes up and down, and around.

This past year was a pretty normal one for me and the missus. It was our first year of being married, but we had lived together for a bit so that was really nothing too new. The biggest life event this past year is that we moved from southeast, Virginia, to Long Island. A pretty big change, but I’m a chameleon. I can blend in wherever I go.

Even in a new locale I still do most of the things I’ve been doing for years. Working, gaming, and hanging out with friends. I’m sore if I work out (play Kinect), I’m tired when I go out late and get up early, and occasionally I get heartburn. Is this what it feels like to be 35? Then I guess I feel like I’m 35, but I still laugh at fart jokes.

Not an Alcoholic (I Swear)

Standard

When I get into a serious gaming session there are few things that can pull me away from the sticks. I’ve ignored hunger, phone calls from the wife, and outings with friends. Just the other day I was deep into Civilization Revolution, trying to knock out the last few achievements, but I had a work Christmas party to attend. I contemplated skipping altogether but the wife convinced me otherwise. I’m glad I went because hilarity ensued.

I wait tables at a local restaurant and let me tell you, if you have never been to a restaurant Christmas party (or any restaurant party) you are missing out. There are a wide variety of people that work in a restaurant. People from all walks of life that normally wouldn’t hang out together, drinking and partying and letting go, all in a very social setting. Mix in alcohol and probably other recreational adjustments, and awkward moments abound.

Let’s go down the list:

  • Inebriated bosses
  • Employees flirting with each other
  • Girls dancing then falling then dancing more, then falling
  • Beer-spitting and fights
  • Singing along to the jukebox

My wife and I tried to get a game of flip cup going near the end of the night. Explaining rules to a bunch of already intoxicated persons is not an easy task. I gave up after the second time everybody finished their beer that I had poured them before we started, but my wife was determined. While explaining the rules one guy was balancing his beer on his head, four different girls were trying to help explain the game, and the rest were finishing the pitcher of beer on the table. What she ended up with was 15 people sitting around a table randomly chugging beer and tossing their cups at each other. At best a 50% success rate.

Being new to the restaurant I stood back and observed more than took part, but even that fell by the wayside. Someone put “The Humpty Dance” on the jukebox, and since I know all the lyrics by heart, I jumped in and gave everybody my best Humpty performance. Dancing drunkenly to the rhythm I realized that these are my people.

I know there were some uncomfortable conversations the next day as people’s shenanigans slowly dawned on them. So, if you ever have the opportunity to attend a restaurant Christmas party, go. You will definitely have a story to tell, or you will be the story.

I’m all about getting achievements, but today is not about me. It’s about you. Well, more specifically it’s about two people. OO7BlueberrySpie and Julian Sherman. Sure one is a clever spy pseudonym and the other is, well, check him out and you decide.

Congrats to these two outgoing individuals. They have achieved what no others can. Despite long odds and billions of internet users. They were the first. The first to wade through the smorgasbord of blogs and other websites to find this one. This one pristine, virginal blog. Congratulations you two. You deserve it.

Day Drinker

How do you write your first blog post? Having no experience, except for one college class, I am hard-pressed to write an introductory post. But I will try my best and hopefully this will be an amazing foray into the unknown. Both for you and for me.

If I had to choose a label I would probably label myself as a “Gamer.” There are many other things and activities that interest me, but “Gamer” is what comes to mind first. I have an Xbox 360 (the Star Wars version) and an Xbox One. I’m not here to say which console is the better, I just prefer the Xbox over other consoles and PC. My current Gamerscore is 58,395, which is why I chose to go with the Xbox One rather than the PS4 or Wii U. Gotta keep that score. I am currently on a 50-day achievement streak, having won over 250 achievements in 31 games. Like I said, I’ve recently got a lot of free time on my hands.

This blog will be a discussion of life as an adult gamer, achievements, with occasional comedy peppered in. I may get off topic sometimes. Don’t hate. One thing I’m going to do is Life Achievements. My wife gave me the idea when she was giving me a hard time about chasing the Gamerscore. They will have a corresponding Lifescore just like the Gamerscore. In fact, I have already unlocked one today:

ImageHave an alcoholic beverage before noon

For me, drinking and gaming go hand-in-hand. Now, I don’t get rip roaring drunk every time I play (although I have) but I’ll have a beverage or two while exploring the vast wasteland out there. Does this make me an alcoholic? Maybe. Does it make me more fun to game with online? Definitely. So if we happen to game online together, just know that I am probably enjoying a tasty brew or cocktail.
